Finite Element Analysis of Cutting Patterns in Human Presbyopic Lenses

Funded by Laser Zentrum, Hannover, Germany

Dr Harvey Burd, Mr Geoffrey Wilde

Finite element models are being developed to investigate the mechanical performance of the human lens when gliding planes are introduced within the lens by means of femtosecond laser pulses Ripken, Oberheide, Fromm, Schumacher, Gerten & Lubatschowski (2008). The models are based on an updated form of the general procedures described in Burd, Judge & Cross, 2002.

Numerical studies are being carried out using the finite element program Oxfem_hyperelastic. This program has been developed at Oxford University specifically to study problems in ophthalmic mechanics. Additional studies are being conducted using the ABAQUS finite element program.
