Modelling Studies on an Accommodating Intraocular Lens (2004-2005)

Dr Harvey Burd and Ms Lydia Gilbert

Finite element methods have been used in conjunction with optical ray-tracing methods to investigate the mechanical and optical performance of a particular design of accommodating intraocular lens (IOL).

Mechanical studies were conducted using finite element procedures that are similar to those that have been developed for the study of the natural lens. The finite element analyses provide numerical solutions for the way in which the IOL changes shape during the accommodation process. These shape changes are used in conjunction with a ray-tracing program (ZEMAX) to investigate the aberrations that are induced during the accommodation process.
