Mechanics of the Cornea (2001-2002)

Preliminary studies have been completed on the response of the cornea to LASIK and ALK (Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty) treatments. Finite element simulations have been conducted using an axisymmetric model of the cornea and also a 3D model.

A 3D finite element of the cornea, based on patient data obtained using an Orbscan system to measure the profiles of the anterior and posterior surfaces, is illustrated below.
